Cyber offenders find new ways to dupe unsuspecting victims

If you ever discover that your cell number is disconnected, don’t take it lightly, it’s not just because you have not paid the bill, the possibilities can be that your net banking account is hacked.
A Sanpada resident Raju Raut fell victim to such a modus operandi of the hackers and saw Rs 1.49 lakh from his bank account vanish.
One day Raut found that his cell number was not functional. When he visited the customer service centre, the authorities told him they have blocked the sim card after they got the request from him claiming that his card was lost.

The authorities also told him that he was provided with a different sim card as well, confirmed a police official.
Raut in turn told the authorities that his sim card was never lost and he never made any such requests.
He reactivated his old sim card after which he got a sms alert from the bank that Rs 1.50 lakh was transferred from his account.
He logged into his account using net banking when he realised that his password was no more functional.
He checked his ICICI account with the bank only to learn that the amount has been transferred to some other account.
Raut then lodged the complaint with Turbhe Police.
According to police, the unidentified accused might have first hacked his net banking account from where he learnt that he has sms alerts activated for which he found the solution by approaching the service provider and blocking the number.
After he blocked the number, he did the transaction through net banking and the victim did not receive the alert message then.
The victim claims that he had never provided the password of his net banking to any unidentified website.
“We doubt that may be his computer had a Trojan via which the hacker hacked the password.
It is important to have proper licensed anti- virus in the computer to avoid such incidents.
The accused had approached the customer service centre of the cell operator at Kalbadevi in Mumbai so it can’t be concluded from where he hacked the password.
There was negligence on part of the service providers.
The documents that the accused provided were fake including the photograph,” the official said adding, further investigations are on.
