Why the iPhone 4G isn’t exciting as the 1st gen?

When Steve Jobs unveiled the Apple iPhone 2G in 2007, the smartphone market was shaken. Nobody had every imagined a full touchscreen with such controls. Multitouch was unheard of and the precision that Apple had in its product was unmatched for years to come. Not to forget the amazing email and browser thrown in. Fact remains that I still use my iPhone 2G with the latest firmware build available for it.

So where does Apple stand today with the iPhone? Well they have successfully enriched the phone with an active app market and the iPod touch and iPad’s are doing great aswell. Together Apple has sold close to 100 million of these handhelds and we are eagerly awaiting the iPhone 4th generation to be unveiled in June.

However since 2007 the competition has gradually caught up with Apple and reality bite is that – Hardware is no longer a differentiator for Apple. There are bigger screens, brighter displays and faster processors out there. The software bit took some time but Windows Phone 7 & Android both have now caught up with Apple. The only clear winner for Apple currently is the App Store which is being chased down by hungry Android developers already. With the mobile revolution just beginning, it would be interesting to see which way the wind blows after the iPhone 4th Gen is released. Unless Apple comes up with something magical, atleast I ain’t very excited about the iPhone 4th gen, not becasue it won’t be the best out there, just that there isn’t much surprise expected!

The hype that iPhone created in 2007 seems missing, and we cant blame Apple for that, can we?
